PostSubject: New Anteater Help   Fri Jul 09, 2010 11:48 am

Hi, I am a volunteer at an animal rescue in Boquete Panama called Paradise Gardens. We have just received a young tamandua. All that we know about her is what we have found online and would appreciate any information that you guys can provide.

How can we tell how old she is?

It has been less than 24 hours since she got here and we are having a difficult time getting her to eat. She slept for a very long time but right now is climbing all over her enclosure and seeming pretty healthy but we know that she needs to eat. She is definitely a baby but will not drink from our little bottle unless we kind of force it.

Any help and recommendations would be appreciated.

Try a dropper. Many have better luck using a dropper and letting the baby lick just a bit at a time.

There isn't much good info on how to tell age but if you have the weight and measure of length that could help. A photo might help but it is very hard to tell from a photo.

Keep the baby warm and the more time you can spend with it the better since it would normally be riding around on mom's back, so would have the contact and stimulation of being with someone.

She lick up a few ants and termites too if you can get them since she may be old enough to starting to taste what mom is eating but she's probably not ready to go fully off of milk. Make sure the formula is a low lactose kind or try goats milk.
