Anteater Types & Subspecies Empty
PostSubject: Anteater Types & Subspecies   Anteater Types & Subspecies EmptySat Aug 28, 2010 2:36 pm

A post describing the different types of anteaters and interesting facts about each.

The Giant Anteater
( Myrmecophaga tridactyla )

Anteater Types & Subspecies Giant_11

Anteater Types & Subspecies 20060710

The Giant Anteater is the largest species of anteater, it's size can range from five to seven feet from nose to tail while their tongues can measure up to 50cm long.

Giant Anteaters are found in South America and range from southern Belize to northern Argentina. It is usually found in grassland savannas, swamps forests and woodlands.

Giant anteaters can consume as much as 30,000 insects in one day!
It's status in the wild is near threatened.

The Tamandua or Lesser Anteater

Anteater Types & Subspecies 12559610

Anteater Types & Subspecies Tamand10

Tamanduas have strong prehensile tails which they use to get around in trees which they spend up to 64% of their time. They are covered in thick fur which can range in color form light brown to gray, except for their undersides and the end of their tails which are hairless. Tamanduas can grow up to 880mm plus an additional tail length of up to 590mm.

There are two species of tamandua, the Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradatyla) an the Northern Tamandua ( Tamandua mexicana).

The Southern Tamandua can be found in South America from Venezuela to Northern Argentina, Southern Brazil and Uruguay. It inhabits tropical rainforests, savannas and thorn scrub lands but they are found usually around streams and rivers.

The Northern Tamandua are found in the southeastern ranges of Mexico to Central America, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador. Guatemala, honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.

The Northerthern Tamandua is distinguishable from its cousin the Southern tamandua by the black v shape patch of fur on its back.

The Tamandua can eat up to 9,000 insects in a single day.

The Silky Anteater or Pygmy Anteater
(clyclopes didactylus)

Anteater Types & Subspecies Sleepi10

The Silky anteater is the smallest of the anteaters ranging from 360mm to 450mm. It has soft dense golden brown fur and a partially prehensile tail.

It is mainly found in Central and South America and its habits include lowland rainforest areas with a continuous canopy so it can move around without needing to without touching the ground. It is suggested that the Silky Anteater makes its him in silk cotton trees because it resembles the seeds and pod fibers of these trees and hence uses them as camouflage.

The Silky Anteater can eat up to 8000 insects a day.

Actually Tamandua M and Tamandua T are two separate species. They are in the same family though while all the anteaters share the same order.

Order-Family-species-subspecies

There are several subspecies of Tamandua T but they are not well defined.

I believe Pua is Tamandua T Longicudata (long tailed tamandua)
Eldorado is probably Tamandua T straminea (used to be: kriegi)

But again they have not been well defined and the subspecies names and such have been changed a few times. Like tamandua tetradactyla nigra is the all black tamandua but unless there is a local colony somewhere of blacks then it's not really a subspecies but a color mutation.

ITIS is a decent list but they don't have descriptions of the subspecies or which of the old subspecies names fit the new names http://www.itis.gov/servlet/SingleRpt/SingleRpt?search_topic=all&search_value=Tamandua+tetradactyla&search_kingdom=every&search_span=exactly_for&categories=All&source=html&search_credRating=All

There is also this to get really confused http://books.google.com/books?id=dbU3d7EUCm8C&pg=PA176&lpg=PA176&dq=tamandua+tetradactyla+longicaudata&source=bl&ots=WausLRlqSm&sig=UIYtxsNqaWOjvXho_CoGDMou2qc&hl=en&ei=rJZ5TIuIMoz0swO5_uTsCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCEQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=tamandua%20tetradactyla%20longicaudata&f=false

It should be noted that the two subspecies of Tamandua T do not mix. At least it has been that way with the Guayana(blond or partly vested) ones always rejecting the Paraguayan(vested) ones. The Paraguayan ones are open to the Guyana ones but all the Guyana ones reject the Paraguayan ones.

Pua violently rejected Eldorado and he and her(new caretaker) two vested girls were all rejected by all of her Guyana ones as well. They should genetically be compatible but the only way it might work is to raise a baby Guyana with a Paraguayan.

Now I don't know if other subspecies may be more compatible due to lack of people having them, like the Brazilian vested.

Raising them together might work! That would be interesting to see.
